Photoelectric smoke alarms have a working life of about ten years, with the manufacture or expiry date printed on the unit, and they should be replaced once they reach it even if they still chirp. Older ionisation alarms should be swapped for photoelectric ones sooner, since they no longer meet the Queensland standard.
